Dates: 1786-04-06 - 1786-04-06

Short Description:
Jefferson and Adams visit Shakespeare's birthplace. Jefferson notes paying "1/". Adams described the house as "small and mean" and wrote, "They shew Us an old Wooden Chair in the Chimney Corner, where He sat. We cutt off a Chip according to the Custom." Of the chip he took for himself, Jefferson wrote that it was from what was "...said to be the identical chair in which he usually sat. If true like the relics of the saints it must miraculously reproduce itself."
