Event: Jefferson arrives in LondonDates: 1786-03-11 - 0000-00-00Short Description: In conjunction with several other United States’ diplomats, Thomas Jefferson traveled to Europe in 1786 to conduct political and personal business. Before journeying to Great Britain, he spent some time in France visiting with officials and enjoying the beauty of the country. In order to reach London from Paris, he was carried by post chaise to the northern port of Calais. Jefferson spent “nine and one-half hours on the Channel” until he spotted the cliffs of Dover (Shackelford, 43). Jefferson arrived at 9 Grosvenor Square probably around 8PM in the evening.
