Event: Jefferson writes a letter to John Jay

Dates: 1786-03-28 - 1786-03-28

Short Description:
Right after Jefferson’s arrival him and Adams had meeting with ambassador from Tripoli. The letter discussed permanent versus temporary treaties as two possibilities. The ambassador said Tunis would go along with whatever Tripoli did but maybe not Algiers. The ambassador also spoke about conditions of foreigners in the eyes of Muslim practice (non-believer=sinner). Americans would have to pay tribute for peace, Jefferson discusses prospects of getting the money from Holland (later Jefferson would speak to Adams on the possibility of establishing an American fleet).
