From 1748-1752 William Pitt, the Elder (Lord Chatham) leased and embellished the South Lodge, one of four lodges within the Chase. He rebuilt the house and created a park and pleasure garden. The latter were much admired and were praised by American George Mason, among others. Nothing now remains of the South Lodge.
